Major projects across the Mid West continue to face a common obstacle: the lack of reliable, unrestricted fresh water. Mining, rare earths processing, green hydrogen, greenhouse agriculture and large-scale industrial development all require consistent volumes of high-quality water. Under the current system, that supply is difficult to secure.
The Bureau of Meteorology classifies the region as severely water stressed, and permanent restrictions already apply. The Yarragadee Aquifer, the primary groundwater source for the Geraldton–Dongara scheme, is expected to reach full allocation in the early 2030s. Rainfall has declined approximately 24% since the 1970s, adding further pressure to an already constrained resource.
For industrial users the problem is more acute than for households. Large continuous daily volumes are hard to obtain under existing allocation rules. Projects that need multi-megalitre supplies often face delays, reduced scale, or the need to develop their own private water solutions — none of which are simple or quick.
The economic cost is significant. The Mid West holds substantial magnetite, rare earths and emerging green hydrogen opportunities. Many of these projects remain constrained while proponents search for a secure water source. Greenhouse horticulture faces similar limits. Expansion is difficult when water allocations cannot be guaranteed.
A commercial-scale desalination plant offers a different path. By producing high-purity potable water from seawater, independent of the aquifer and existing scheme, it becomes possible to supply unrestricted volumes at commercial scale. That removes the single largest bottleneck currently facing industrial growth in the region.
Until reliable, unrestricted water is available, capital investment and project timelines across mining, energy and agriculture will continue to be shaped by scarcity rather than demand.
